Bugs! Literacy, Math and Science Bundle
This collection of centers will go great with your Bugs, Insects, or Spring Unit! It will be particularly helpful if you prefer to use photographs of real bugs and like to focus on factual information. There are a few cutesy images included to provide some variety, but we’ve kept those to a minimum!
These items are all designed to be printed and laminated so they can be used over and over again. They are best when printed in color on cardstock. Consult your printer’s manual if you would like to print on a smaller scale to conserve ink and paper.
This collection is ideal for classrooms that use a Montessori approach to teaching. However, they can be easily adapted to any centers-based classroom.

4 LITERACY CENTERS
--- Initial Sound Clip Cards: 8 cards with photos of bugs and a row of letters. Use a clothespin to clip the correct letter for the initial sound.
---Bug Rhyming Riddles: 8 cards with photos of bugs and 8 cards with a rhyming riddle written. Teacher reads the card and child identifies the bug that rhymes with the word.
---Buggy Phonetic Sentences: 9 sentence cards using (mostly) phonetically decodable text. Each sentence provides factual information about a bug. Read and match to the picture of the bug. Also excellent as a jumping off point for further discussion and research.
---Buzz!! A CVC Words Game. 30 cards with CVC words and 6 Buzz!! cards. Take turns reading the cards. If you draw a Buzz!! card, return to the pile and start again.
4 MATH CENTERS
--- Counting Ladybugs: Number Cards 0-20 and ladybug counters. Use for a variety of counting games.
--- Ladybug Roll-a-Dot Addition: Ladybug mat and recording sheet. Provided with a green background and without. Roll a die a place dots on the wings of the ladybug. Write addition equation on the recording sheet.
--- Which is Greater? Compare clipart bugs to see which group has more.
--- Buggy Hundred Board: 100 chart with a ladybug background can be used for a variety of 100 chart activities. Chart with dotted numbers is also provided for number writing practice.
5 SCIENCE CENTERS
--- Insect 3-Part Cards: 9 insects depicted. Use for insect identification, vocabulary development, matching games and beginning reading activities.
--- Parts of a Butterfly 3-Part Cards: Photograph of a real Monarch butterfly is used. Cards depict the following external parts highlighted: wings, abdomen, thorax, head, antennae, butterfly. Blackline master is included so students can create a booklet.
--- Sorting Insects/Not-Insects: 16 picture cards and a sorting mat
--- Comparing Insects and Arachnids: Venn diagram to compare characteristics of insects and arachnids. Teacher support may be required for younger students who do not write.
--- Life Cycles: Charts representing life cycles of ladybug and butterfly. Corresponding cut & paste activity is included.
